language

While most Egyptians speak some English and many speak fluent English, the language used is Arabic. I have learned only a few words. I attribute this partly to my inability to pronounce the words correctly and partly on the fact that I can communicate in English when needed. Many times, I sit quietly and listen to the staccato sound of the Arabic around me and have no clue. It is spoken quickly and loudly - especially in the streets.

shokra - thank you
afwan - you're welcome
Yalla Beena - let's go
Saba helkheir - good morning
Sabha elnoor - (the answer)
Ana Afsa - I'm sorry
Elly Yehsal Yehsal - whatever happens, happens
Salamo aleikam - peace be upon you

The most common though is - Insha-Allah - if God is willing
No plan is ever actually confirmed - you would say that we will meet tomorrow Insha-Allah - this phrase is used constantly. Even if you know you have other plans, you don't want to be rude, so you just say Insha-Allah. Everyone is telling me they hope to meet my family when I bring them to Egypt soon - I just answer Insha-Allah!
